With the summer and warm weather rapidly approaching us this month, and June being National Safety Month – here are a few summer safety tips.

  • Stay hydrated: It’s important to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially when spending time outdoors or engaging in physical activities. Dehydration can lead to heat-related illnesses.
  • Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Always look to protect yourself from the sun: Wear sunscreen with a high SPF, preferably SPF 30 or higher, and apply it generously to all exposed skin. Try and wear protective clothing, such as hats, sunglasses, and lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to shield yourself from the sun’s harmful rays.
  • Be mindful of heat-related illnesses: Heatstroke and heat exhaustion are common during hot summer months. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat, stay in shaded or air-conditioned areas when possible, and take breaks in cool areas. If you experience symptoms like dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, or excessive sweating, seek medical attention immediately.
  • Practice water safety: Whether you’re swimming in a pool, at the beach, or enjoying water sports, it’s crucial to prioritize water safety.
    • Never swim alone,
    • Supervise children closely and follow all safety rules at water parks or recreational areas.
    • Wear appropriate flotation devices if needed and know the signs of drowning.
  • Stay alert during outdoor activities: If you’re hiking, biking, or participating in other outdoor activities, be aware of your surroundings. Use appropriate safety gear and equipment, follow designated trails, and inform someone about your plans or location before heading out. Bring along a friend!
  • Summer brings out ticks and mosquitoes! Help prevent insect-related issues by using appropriate insect repellent containing DEET or other recommended ingredients, wear long sleeves and pants in areas with dense vegetation, and check for ticks after spending time outdoors.
  • Try And stay cool: Avoid overexertion in extreme heat, especially during peak hours of the day. Opt for activities during cooler parts of the day, take regular breaks in shaded areas, and use fans or air conditioning to keep indoor spaces cool.
  • Practice food safety: Summer gatherings often involve outdoor picnics and barbecues. Make sure to handle and store food properly to prevent foodborne illnesses. Keep perishable foods chilled, wash hands before handling food, and cook meat thoroughly to the appropriate internal temperature.
  • Weather Changes! Stay informed about weather conditions: Pay attention to weather forecasts, especially if you plan to engage in outdoor activities. Be aware of thunderstorm warnings, excessive heat advisories, or other weather-related alerts and take appropriate precautions.
  • Fireworks! We all love to watch them but be very cautious: If you plan to use fireworks, follow all local laws and guidelines. Always supervise children when fireworks are present, maintain a safe distance, and have a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby.

Remember, these are general safety tips, and it’s important to consider individual circumstances and any specific risks associated with your location or planned activities. Stay safe and enjoy your summer!
