Honoring Our Veterans: Our Heartfelt Tributes - William Allen Moll

Your Story Is Worth Protecting Banner

Our next Miers Veterans post is shared by Jo Ellen Wexler, one of our account managers. Jo shares her personal story as well as several wonderful pictures regarding her family and the Navy!

Although my father William Allen Moll did not make a career of being in the Navy, the Navy was always a big part of my family growing up!

My father was an Aviation Structural Mechanic, 2nd class, and was stationed in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Not long before his discharge, he met my mother Betty June Thompson, who was originally from Birmingham, AL but was living in Jacksonville Beach at the time. My father came back home to Pennsylvania after his discharge and continued to correspond with my mother. Eventually they were married in 1953.

I have two older brothers, Mark A. Moll and Scott A. Moll who decided they would also be joining the Navy upon their high school graduation!

Mark joined first and was stationed in Virginia Beach where he became an Aviation Ordinance, 2nd class. The next year, Scott joined as well, and was also originally stationed in Virginia Beach, where he eventually became an Aviation Ordinance, 1st class.

Both of my brothers were a part of the Squadron VA34 Blue Blasters and were attached to the USS John F Kennedy where they were deployed to the Mediterranean for a 7 month tour. While out at sea, the USS Belknap had a collision with the USS John F Kennedy on November 22, 1975. I can remember my parents worried and waiting for updates to make sure my brothers were ok. Luckily both were ok, although six members of the USS Belknap lost their lives and one member of the USS John F Kennedy lost his life. My brother Scott received a citation for heroic achievement for his help in fighting the fire that broke out on the USS John F Kennedy.

As if history repeated itself, my brother Scott, while later docked in Spain in 1977 , met his future wife Isabel in Malaga, Spain. They were married in 1978 and are still married to this day!
